Japanese PM Abe in Dhaka

Update : 06 Sep 2014, 07:14 AM

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has arrived in Dhaka on a two-day visit at the invitation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

It is the first visit of any Japanese prime minister in 14 years as former Japanese Premier Yoshiro Mori arrived in Dhaka in 2000.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina received the Japanese prime minister at the airport.

A guard of honour and state salute was given to Shinzo Abe.

In the visit, Bangladesh will try to get more Japanese investment and assistance while Tokyo will focus on getting Bangladesh’s support for the UN Security Council non-permanent election for the 2016-17 period.

Bangladesh is also a contender for the seat for the same term but only one nation will get the seat from the Asian region.

The Japanese PM is accompanied by a strong business delegation and he is scheduled to give a speech at a business seminar organised by FBCCI and JETRO.

He will also have bilateral meetings with Sheikh Hasina to sign a joint statement, meet President Abdul Hamid, leader of the opposition Rowshan Ershad and BNP chief Khaleda Zia.
