Deposition in Khaleda graft cases deferred again

Update : 03 Sep 2014, 08:00 AM

A Dhaka court has deferred until September 10 the recording of testimonies against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in the Zia Charitable Trust and Zia Orphanage Trust graft cases.

Judge Basudev Roy of the Special Judge Court 3 fixed the date following a time petition filed by the defence lawyer on Wednesday.

Khaleda’s lawyer and also a BNP leader, Syed Asifa Ashrafi Papia, said the time plea was lodged in view of the hearing of Khaleda Zia's appeal that challenged the High Court order of rejecting her two petitions in two corruption cases.

Earlier in day, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia appeared before a makeshift court in connection with Charitable Trust and Zia Orphanage Trust corruption cases.

She arrived at the court premises around 1:10pm on Wednesday afternoon, while the hearing started around 1:25pm, said Khaleda's counsel Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokan.

The BNP chairperson is accompanied by senior leaders of the party.

Earlier on July 27, the same court deferred until September 3 the recording of testimonies against Khaleda Zia, responding to a time plea.

On May 12, Khaleda filed two writ petitions with the High Court, challenging the appointment of Judge Basudev Roy and the indictments in the two cases. After the High Court had rejected the petitions on June 19, she challenged the order at the Appellate Division.
