Ferry services on the Mawa-Kewrakandi route halted around 3:45pm on Monday due to erosion onslaught that continued at Mawa by the Padma River.
Sirajul Haq, manager of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) at Maowa, said the recently replaced terminal no3 at Mawa which is facing strong currents of the river prompted the authorities to suspend Ro Ro ferry movement.
“If we continue the ferry services through the terminal, there might be another long-term disruption on the route,” he said.
He also said seven shops were also gulped down by the mighty river.
Several hundred vehicles remained stranded on both sides of the river following the suspension of ferry services.
The officials are putting all-out efforts to resume ferry services as soon as possible, BIWTC sources said.
