Sylhet City Corp premise declared tobacco free

The Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) premises have been declared smoking free.

Mayor Ariful Haque Choudhury made the announcement in a program on Sunday.

Ariful Haque said: “It’s a memorable day as we are going to establish a smoking free city.”

“Firstly, we will take initiative to make city corporation area smoke free which will be enacted from today (Sunday), then restaurants, educational institutions and all other public organisations will be declared as smoking free areas.”

Later, the mayor signed an agreement with Simantic Tobacco Free Project, a Sylhet based NGO, in this regard.

Sylhet District Bar President AFM Ruhul Anam Choudhury Mintu, Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids (CTFK) Advisor Soriul Islam, Sylhet Press Club General Secretary Mohammad Serajul Islam, City Councilor Abdul Muhit Javed, journalist Shah Suhel Ahmed, among others, addressed the meeting.

Taifur Rahman CTFK Chief Executive presented the keynote paper.

SCC and Simantic Tobacco Free Project, a Sylhet based NGO, jointly organised the programme.

SCC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Enamul Habib presided over the meeting held at SCC conference Hall.
