The authority of a garment factory has sued 260 workers for their alleged involvement with vandalism in Jamgora area of Ashulia.
The administrative officer of Desiner Jeans, Sharif Hossain, filed the case with Ashulia police station on Saturday morning.
The vandalism case was filed against 110 named and 150 unnamed workers, said the official.
Sharif said: “The authority suspended line chief Jahangir along with another worker, whose name is also Jahangir, for violating the rules of factory on Wednesday morning.”
“Following the suspension, the workers staged demonstration, demanding their reappointment. Later, the authority shutdown the factory in face of worker's agitation on the day.”
“Later on Thursday morning, the workers vandalised the factory after noticing the shutdown notice. At one stage, industrial police rushed in and brought the situation under control,” added Sharif.
While contacted, Kalpana Akhter, executive director of Bangladesh Central for Worker Solidarity, said: “The false case has been filed in order to harass the workers.”
“We have given a 24-hour ultimatum. If the authority does not withdraw the case within the time, we will stage tougher movement.”
Director of Ashulia Industrial Police Mostafijur Rahman said: “Additional police have been deployed in the area to avert further unrest.”
