A number of areas in the capital suffered power outage for seven hours as circuit breakers at two grid sub-stations failed around 3pm. The power supply was restored at 10pm.
The areas that suffered from the outage are Rampura, Kakrail, Taltola, Karwan Bazar and Dhanmondi – all covered by the Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC).
Director (operation) of DPDC Mizanur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune last evening: “The supply of electricity in those areas has been hampered since 3pm as the Ullon grid sub-station at Rampura and the Dhanmondi grid sub-station stopped generating power due to glitches in the circuit breakers.
“The repair work is going on and the supply will resume around 9pm.”
Mizan later confirmed the Dhaka Tribune that the power supply resumed at 10pm.
When contacted last evening, Director of Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB) Chowdhury Alamgir Hossain said they were yet to form a committee to investigate the incident.
Thousands of people in the five areas suffered due to the power failure.
Shahana Begum from Dhanmondi told the Dhaka Tribune that there was no electricity for over four hours and they were facing many problems in carrying out household chores.
Munir Hossain, a local restaurant owner, said: “Due to the power outage, many of our customers cancelled their orders and left.”
According to DPDC officials, around 2,000,000 consumers live in those five areas.
