Update : 28 Aug 2014, 03:03 PM

A group of local criminals have shot at least three people, including a woman to death, at Sonalibagh in the capital's Maghbazar area after allegedly failing to collect extortion from them.

The deceased are Ranu Begum Brishti, 30, and her tenants Munna, 20, and Billal, 22.

Witnesses said a gang of local criminals, numbering seven to eight entered inside the house of Ranu Begum and opened fire on the family members around 8pm, leaving four people critically injured.

Hearing the hue and cry, locals rushed in and took them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where on duty doctors declared Ranu, Munna and Billal dead.

Ranu's younger brother Hridoy, 18, is undergoing treatment at the DMCH, said DMCH police outpost In-Charge Mojammel Haque.

Ranu's uncle Shah Alam told the Dhaka Tribune: “A group of local criminals, including Kala Babu, Jahangir, Rasel, Dulal and Alam, was demanding extortion from my niece Ranu for a long time. But, she refused to give them any money.”

“After failing to collect extortion from her, they entered the house and open fired on the family members and the tenants, leaving four people injured.”

“Later, Ranu and two of his tenants died at the DMCH while Ranu's brother Hridoy is taking treatment,” he added.

Sub-Inspector SM Majhar from Dhaka Metropolitan Police Control Room told the Dhaka Tribune: “We got information that three people were gunned down in Maghbazar area in the evening. A team of Ramna police have left for the spot.”
