The hospital authority has nothing to do if the patients’ families are not cautious to prevent baby theft, Director of Dhaka Medical College Hospital Brig Gen Mustafizur Rahman said.
The DMCH chief made the statement at a press briefing in the capital on Thursday afternoon.
He said: “We do not have that much manpower to watch over all the babies in the hospital. If the guardians are not aware of their children, we have nothing to do with it.”
“If the patients introduce the attendants as their relatives then how are we supposed to know about their identities?” he added.
On August 21, a woman befriended the mother of the two-day-old baby before carrying the infant out of the hospital in broad daylight, in plain view of law enforcement personnel and under the noses of closed-circuit camera staff.
However, the Rapid Action Battalion personnel have rescued the baby from Kalameshwar village of Board Bazar of Gazipur early Thursday.
Following the incident, the Dhaka Medical College Hospital authority formed a three-member investigation committee headed by Gynecology department’s Associate Professor Dr Afroza Kutubi.
A case was filed with Shahbagh police station in this connection.
The High Court on Wednesday ordered judicial inquiry over the matter.
