The baby, who was stolen from Dhaka Medical College Hospital, has been rescued from Kalameshwar village of Board Bazar of Gazipur.
A team of RAB, in a raid, rescued the baby from the village in the early hours of Thursday (3:30am), Mukti Mahmud, commanding officer of RAB Headquarters, told Dhaka Tribune. The RAB team also arrested Rasheda Khanam allias Parvin, 48 and Bely Akhter alias Rahima, 45, who were involved in the newborn baby missing incident. Arrestee Rasheda Khanam allias Parvin, who was involved in the theft, usually sell newborn babies to others or demand ransom from the people in exchange of the baby. At one stage she handed over the baby to Bely Akhter, wife of Sona Mia of Gazipur.
A woman, Ruma Akhter, gave birth to a pair of twins at the Infant ward of DMCH on August 20.
On August 21, a woman befriended the mother of the two-day-old baby before carrying the infant out of the hospital in broad daylight, in plain view of law enforcement personnel and under the noses of closed-circuit camera staff.
Following the incident, the Dhaka Medical College Hospital authority formed a three-member investigation committee headed by gynaecology department’s Associate Professor Dr Afroza Kutubi.
A case was filed with Shahbagh police station in this connection.
The High Court on Wednesday ordered judicial inquiry over the matter.
