Police beat journalist in Kushtia

Police have allegedly beaten a local journalist of Kumarkhali of Kushtia on Tuesday night. The victim is Akhil Poddar, a special correspondent of private TV channel Ekushey Television. Kumarkhali police station OC Lutfur Rahman has confirmed the incident. The incident took place when Akhil Puddar was returning home riding on a bicycle at 9pm, said the journalist. “When I reached Batikamara rail gate of the upazila, the patrolling police team led by Kamarkhali police station ASI Abul Kalam Azad intercepted me,” he said. The police official scolded him after Akhil introduced himself as a journalist, he added. Akhil claimed: “When I protested the police official’s comments, they beat me up severely.” At one stage, police took him to Kumarkhali police station. On information, the local journalists rushed to the police station and besieged it protesting the incident. Later, Akhil was admitted to Kumarkhali Health Complex where he is now under treatment.
