'Rice bucket challenge' an India charity chain

Update : 26 Aug 2014, 03:11 AM

An Indian woman has came up with her own version of the overwhelming popular ‘Ice Bucket Challenge,’ reports Independent.

Unlike the ice bucket challenge, her version, called the ‘Rice Bucket Challenge” simply asks the participants to donate a bucket of rice to someone in need.

It is described in its Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/ricebucketchallenge/timeline) as an 'Indian version for Indian needs'.

The challenge is still in its infancy, with the inaugural donation made on Sunday morning.

It was conceived by Manju Latha Kalanidihi, a journalist from Hyderabad in central India, and is proving a hit across the country.

Already the Facebook page has received more than 15,000 thousands like.

The Ice Bucket Challenge, sometimes called the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, is an activity involving dumping a bucket of ice water on someone's head to promote awareness of the disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and encourages donations to research. It went viral throughout social media in mid 2014.

The challenge dares nominated participants to be filmed having a bucket of ice water poured on their heads and challenges others to do the same. A common stipulation is that nominated people have 24 hours to comply or forfeit by way of a charitable financial donation.
