Update : 25 Aug 2014, 12:36 PM

The owners and drivers of battery-run rickshaws in Chittagong city have been instructed to remove battery and motor from their vehicles within August 30.

The direction came from a joint meeting of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP), Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) and Chittagong district administration.

The meeting decided to conduct drives across the city to evict battery-run rickshaws from August 30.

The decision was taken according to the orders of concerned ministry and the High Court (HC).

The meeting was held at the conference room of CMP Headquarters on Monday morning.

If the authorities found any battery-run rickshaw, they will seize its battery and motor and take legal actions after the deadline.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Engineer Mohammad Hasan of Detective Branch at CMP, also the spokesman of CMP, told Dhaka Tribune that the owners and drivers of battery-run rickshaws would have to take permission from CCC to ply their vehicles in the city area after removing the batteries and motors from their vehicles by August 30.

Besides, the meeting also urged the city people to help the authorities to implement the decisions for public security and safe transportation across the port city, the ADC said.

On August 5, the HC imposed ban on plying of battery-run rickshaws on city roads rejecting the appeal prayer of the owners and drivers, said Deputy Commissioner (DC) Faruk Ahmed of CMP Traffic Division (North Zone).

Recently, CMP received the decision of HC through concerned ministry and sat with the concerned authorities for taking decision how to implement the decision, the DC said.
