An organised gang of thieves has allegedly been stealing money for long from the clients who visit the Raipur branch of Islami Bank Bangladesh.
On the other hand, it was alleged that the bank authorities have yet to take any mentionable steps against the gang despite repeated pleas from the affected clients, although there are CCTV cameras active during the bank hours to aid them.
It was learnt that the gang on Thursday stole Tk8 lakh from a retired army officer in front of the bank’s cash counter just before the money was deposited.
Contacted, the victim army officer, Nuruzzaman, a resident of Karua village of the upazila, said he withdrew the money from his pension fund from a local Sonali Bank branch and then around 10am he went to the Islami bank branch to deposit it.
At one stage, an accomplice of the gang dropped some Tk10 notes near his legs and he requested the former army man’s help picking them up. He obliged, keeping the stash of notes next to him.
Afterwards, he found that his bag was missing. He immediately caught the alleged accomplice Nazrul Islam, son of Manirul Islam, a resident of Krisnanagar village of Kutavata upazila of Khulna and handed over him to local police after filing a case. In this regard, Manager of Raipur Islami Bank Ltd branch Jasim Uddin acknowledged the Tk8 lakh theft but denied receiving any complaints from the affected clients.
Raipur police station OC Manjurul Hoque Akanda confirmed the filing of the case, saying a man was arrested and they recovered some important information from the accused.
