The workers of a readymade garment (RMG) factory have blocked Chittagong city’s Alangkar Intersection on Sunday afternoon demanding their outstanding salaries.
The blockade caused long tailback on the city roads which are connecting to the intersection.
The blockade programme was going on till filing of this report at 7pm, said sources in industrial police.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Azizur Rahman of Pahartoli police station told Dhaka Tribune that some 900 workers of The Moons Fashions put the blockade in the area at around 4:30pm demanding their two months due salaries.
“The workers went to the factory in the morning and asked the garment authorities to pay their dues but the authorities did not sound properly which raised the agitation amongst the workers,” he said.
Later, they took position on the road to press home their demand, he added.
Additional police forces of industrial police and Pahartoli police station are deployed in the area.
The law enforcing agencies are trying to remove the blockade which was suffering the city dwellers especially the people who were returning their residences from their working places, added the OC.
“BGMEA representatives went to the spot and tried to calm the workers down by sitting in a meeting with the garment authorities,” the OC further added.
