The passengers of the launch, which got stuck in Meghna river with over 600 passengers on board after hitting a hidden shoal in Haim Char upazila of Chandpur since Friday night, have been rescued on Saturday afternoon.
According to locals, the Patuakhali-bound launch, MV Sattar Khan 1, started its journey from Dhaka on Friday night and it ran aground in mid-river around 11pm.
BIWTA Port Official Mobarak Hossain told the Dhaka Tribune: “A launch, MV Raf Raf, has reached the spot from Chandpur around 10am in order to rescue the trapped passengers.”
“The rescue work has been completed within 12 noon.”
Chandpur Police Super Amin Jafar said police and coast guard members have been deployed to the spot in order to ensure passengers' safety.
