Community centre under Chhatra Dal attack in Sylhet

Update : 21 Aug 2014, 08:42 PM

UK expatriates from Sylhet demanded immediate arrest of 24 activists of Chhatra Dal, the students wing of the BNP, who allegedly vandalised a community centre in the city on August 17.

The demand came at a press conference held in the Sylhet Press club yesterday.

On August 17, a group of Chhatra Dal men allegedly attacked Sunrise Community Centre situated in Patantula area and vandalised 15 motor vehicles parked outside the centre while a wedding ceremony was taking place inside.

Upon receiving information, police went to the spot and brought the situation under control.

In this connection, Selim Hossain, a UK expatriate and father of the bride, filed a case with Jalalabad police station against 24 Chhatra Dal men and 10/15 unidentified people.

Police have arrested two Chhatra Dal men, Yeasin, 25 and Anam, 18, so far.

The attackers confessed that they had attacked the centre because Mabub Kadir Shahi, prime accused in the Chhatra Dal cadre Jillur Rahman Jilu murder case, was attending the wedding ceremony that day, said sources in Jalalabad police station.

Jilu was killed on June 27 in Patantula area this year.

Amra Probashi, a group of UK expatriates from Sylhet, arranged a press conference yesterday where they called upon the authorities concerned to take punitive action against the culprits.

They said such attacks at a social event was not acceptable. Such incidents would discourage expatriates to return to the country. Later, they formed a human chain in front of the press club.
