The local fishermen have beat 13 pirates up and gouged out eyes of six in South Bay some 100km away from Nijhum Dweep in Hatia upazila of Chittagong early Thursday.
The identities of the pirates could not be known immediately.
Syed Md Fazle Rabbi, officer-in-charge of Hatia police station told the Dhaka Tribune: “The gang of pirates, numbering 15-20, attacked the local fishermen around 4am, while the fishermen were netting in the South Bay. At one stage of scuffle, the fishermen managed to catch 13 pirates.”
“Later, the fishermen beat the pirates up and gouged out eyes of six. The other pirates managed to flee the scene.”
Being informed, the coast guard members rescued the injured pirates and admitted them at Hatia Upazila Health Complex in critical condition, added the OC.
He further said: “As the incident happened in remote area, it will take some time to get detail information in this regard.”
