Mentally ill man in shackles

Update : 21 Aug 2014, 03:25 PM

A 35-year-old man, who reportedly has some mental disorder, has been chained by his family for around two months at Gojaria village in Bogra's Sherpur upazila.

The family of Ainal Fakir, who has three sons, said he would often beat people and take away his neighbours' valuables after he began to suffer from a mental illness around three months ago.

The annoyed neighbours advised his family to put him in chains in an effort to keep him at bay and so he has had iron shackles put on him and was kept in a hole beside the Bangali river.

A local Union Parishad member, Ajgar Ali, echoes the family and says his family does not have any financial capacity to treat him and so he has been put in chains.

Talking to the Dhaka Tribune, Sherpur police station Officer-in-Charge (investigation) Mizanur Rahman said he sent a sub-inspector to investigate the matter.
