Ebola: Govt to send medicine to Sierra Leone

The government is sending medicine worth Tk1 crore to Sierra Leone to fight the deadly Ebola disease that has turned into an epidemic in the West African region.

Health Minister Mohammad Nasim handed over the medicine of 41 genres to Major General Abul Kalam Azad, director general of military service at the ministry on Tuesday afternoon.

The minister told the reporters about the government's aid in a press conference at the ministry.

Nasim said the medicine would be sent by Bangladesh Army.

Alongside the medical teams of Bangladesh Army, the UN peacekeepers would extend medical services to the Ebola infected in the regions, the minister also said.

The Embassy of Sierra Leone at Dhaka sought assistance to combat Ebola, Nasim added.

So far, Ebola has killed a suspected number of 1,145 people among confirmed 2,127 infected cases in four countries, Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. However, laboratory confirmed cases suggest the death toll reaches as many as 1,310, Major General Abul Kalam Azad quoted as an estimate.

He said the peace keepers from Bangladesh have been provided with sufficient protective equipments.
