6 to die for killing 3 RAB, Coast Guard men

A district court has sentenced six persons to death and seven to life term imprisonment for their involvement in killing a RAB official and two members of Coastguard.

Bagerhat District and Sessions Judge SM Solaiman pronounced the verdict on Tuesday afternoon.

The court also acquitted two others as they were not found guilty.

The seven lifers will also have to pay Tk10,000 each. In case of failure to pay the amount, they will have to spend one more year in jail.

The death sentence awardees are Rafiqul Sheikh, Kuddus Sheikh, Idris Sheikh, Bablu Sheikh, Altaf Fakir and Ilias Sheikh.

The lifers are Riazul Sheikh, Akram Sheikh, Alalm Sheikh, Badsha Sheikh, Jamal Sheikh, Sumon Sheikh and Aslam Sheikh.

According to the case statement, a joint team led by the then commanding officer of RAB 6 Mehedi Hasan and Lt Col Siddique of the Coastguard conducted a raid getting information that robbers were taking preparations for a robbery at a canal of Poshur river in Sundarbans on December 1, 2006.

At one stage, the robbers jumped into the river with RAB officer Md Kanchan, 48, and Coastguard members MH Kabir and MA Islam. The bodies of the three law enforcers were later recovered from the area.

On December 2 of the same year, the then Deputy Assistant Director of RAB 6 Md Mohsin Ali filed a case with Mongla police station.
