The second solo painting exhibition of artist Md Shahnoor Mamun titled “Jol Chobi” featuring fascinating artworks depicting the exquisiteness of monsoon is going on at the La Galerie, Alliance Française de Dhaka.
Artists Samarjit Roy Chawdhury, Hamiduzzaman Khan and Alakesh Ghosh along with other distinguished guests were present in the opening ceremony on August 8.
According to Samarjit Roy Chowdhury, the source of watercolor painting is the combination of light and shadow. Mamun displayed his dexterity in portraying the details of light and shadow in his paintings that celebrate the beauty of monsoon in water colour.
Artist Shohanoor Mamun said in his speech that his love for the medium is endless. He is very much inspired by the legendary Bangladeshi artist Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin and so he dedicated this exhibition to his name.
As the artist adores monsoon, the love for rain holds the larger part in “Jol Chobi.” He depicts the running boats loaded with passengers on Bramaputra, traffic of boats and a busy river bank, as if it is the story of a river.
The work entitled “City Rain” showcases the wet roads of Dhaka city during rain, busy movements of rickshaws and people heading for work with umbrellas, veiling themselves from the downpour.
Another piece, “Old Dhaka” depicts a number of living issues such as; struggles and bustles of hard working people living in the narrow streets of the Old City, Babu Bazar Bridge, Dhaka’s Islampur, old and shabby buildings, movements of rickshaws and traditional horse-drawn carriages and many more.
But his works are not confined to Dhaka only, he presents the rivers Matamuhuri at Lama in Bandarban and Brahmaputra, by portraying the lively sights into his canvases. The exhibition will be open to all until August 26.
