Update : 18 Aug 2014, 07:50 PM

A 12-year-old girl sustained serious injuries as bricks fell on her head from an under-construction building in the capital’s Sutrapur area yesterday.

The victim, Sohana Akhter, is a class -six student of Dhaka Central Girls’ High School, Her father Md Sohel said around 2pm, while Sohana was returning home after attending an examination, the bricks fell on her head. She was later admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital with severe injuries.

“The seven-storey under-construction building is situated right beside our tin-shed house. We have asked the owner of the building a number of times to put nets around the site as bricks keep falling on our roof,” said Sohel, a rickshaw van driver.

“However, the owner Morshed did not pay any heed to our requests. He put some sacks on our tin-shed roof instead of putting nets around his building.

“As soon as my daughter entered our main gate, 10-12 bricks from the building fell on her head,” Sohel said.

Doctors at DMCH said Sohana’s head was broken and many parts of her body were severely injured.

Morshed, the owner of the building, could not be reached over phone despite several attempts.

According to the existing building code, the owner, structural engineer and architect of an under-construction building are responsible for taking safety measures to protect public life.

Meanwhile, Sutrapur police said they were not aware of the incident.
