22 Jamaat activists sent to jail in Barisal

A Barisal court sent 22 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami including the city wing's Amir, Nayeb-e-Amir and secretary on Friday afternoon.

Barisal Kotwali police arrested them late on Thursday night.

Police also seized Tk1,75,700 and 22 mobile phone sets from the arrestees.

Shakhawat Hossain, Barisal Kotwali police station's officer in charge, said police raided first floor of the house of Dr Majed Ali at South Alekanda area of the city around 10:30pm on Thursday acting on a tip-off that they were planning to sabotage the National Mourning Day.

From that house police detained 22 leaders and activists of JIB with money and mobile phones, the OC also said.

Among the arrested Jamaat leaders and activists were the city unit's Amir Moazzem Hossain Helal, Nayeb-e-Amir Bazlur Rahman, Secretary Jahiruddin Md Babar.

The arrested were later shown arrested under section 54 of the penal code and produced before the court on Friday noon.

Court, refusing their bail prayer, ordered to have them sent to Barisal Central Jail on Friday afternoon, the police and court officials said.

On the other hand, Barisal city and district units of Jamaat-e-Islami, issuing press releases, condemned the arrest of their leaders and activists and demanded their immediate release.

The leaders of the organisation claimed in the press release that the arrested leaders and activists were attending a post-Eid programme, a regular activity of the organisation.

They also said the recovered money were personal and organisational subscriptions and the mobile phones were absolutely for personal uses.
