A local Juba League leader was arrested in Khagrachhari yesterday on a rape charge.
The arrested was Md Belal Hossain, 28, from the Gachchhabil area under Manikchhari upazila in Khagrachhari. He is the organising secretary of ward 2 unit of Juba League in the upazila.
Police sources said Belal raped a woman from Hathazari upazila in Chittagong on Monday night at his house. He brought the victim to his house by tempting her with the possibility of a job and by promising marriage. Earlier, Belal threatened his wives Asma Begum and Rasheda Begum that he would divorce them and sent them away to their parents’ houses.
When the locals learned of the rape and informed the police yesterday morning, police arrested Belal and rescued the victim form Belal’s house.
Shafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Manikchhari police station, said police arrested Belal since the victim had lodged a case against him with the police station.
