Police arrested a ward councillor on Monday night on charges of extortion in Comilla city.
Billal Hossain, the ward councillor, was arrested around 9pm from his house in the city’s Chhotora area.
Officer-in-Charge of Comilla Kotowali model police station Khorshed Alam said Bilal was arrested in connection with a case filed by Saiful Islam, the son of Advocate Abdur Razzak, from the same area.
Abdur Razzak said when Saiful refused to give him money, Billal erected some pillars on the way to Saiful’s warehouse to bar the transportation of goods to the go-down.
Razzak also said Billal had earlier attacked one Advocate Jamal at his house when he refused to pay Billal the amount of money he demanded.
Billal was harassing Razzak and his family members as the latter was a witness in the case filed by Jamal against Billal, he added.
