The local administration imposed ban on public gathering in Baghaichhari and Kaokhali upazilas in Rangamati yesterday to avoid untoward incidents.
Baghaichhari UNO Sumon Chowdhury said the ban was imposed in the sadar upazila as two factions of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (Santu Larma and MN Larma) announced to hold separate demonstration programmes at the same place simultaneously.
The PCJSS (Santu Larma) called a human chain demanding suspension of the government plan to set up a science and technology university and a medical college in district.
On the other hand, the other group announced a human chain on the same venue demanding full implementation of the CHT Accord.
Apprehending tension, the local administration clamped down the ban from 7am to 10pm yesterday to maintain law and order, the UNO said.
Meanwhile, Kaokhali UNO Afia Akter said the PCJSS (Santu Larma) and the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) called separate human chain and demonstration programmes at the same venue and time demanding the suspension of setting up the university and the medical college.
OC of Kaokhali police station Nilu Kanti Borua said the ban was imposed from 10am to 6pm to avoid any untoward incidents.
PCJSS chief Santu Larma at a press conference on July 14 criticised the government for taking initiatives to establish the institutions without discussing the issues with the CHT Regional Council, as per related laws.
He claimed that if admission takes place following the proposed rules and regulations, 90% outsider students would get scope to take admission in the institutions.
Santu Larma suggested that the government should focus on the three government colleges in the CHT region.
