Authorities have ended the rescue operations after the passenger boat that capsized at in the Jamuna River in Chouhali upazila of Sirajganj on Thursday.
Chouhali Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mohammad Abdullah made the announcement on Saturday.
Mohammad Abdullah said: “BIWTA along with divers had run the rescue operations for two days and the operations have been declared concluded as no bodies and capsized boat was found in two days effort.”
The operation was likely not to bring any result as the capsized boat and bodies were flooded away by downstream, he added.
Meanwhile, the announcement of ending the rescue operations triggered anger among the locals, as relatives of the missing people rushed to the river side.
“I had a list of missing people in the incident given by the locals,” Officer in Charge Shamsul Haque of Chouhali police station told the Dhaka Tribune.
According to the list of missing passengers, Shahnaz Begum, wife of Abdul Kalam of Jotpara village, their daughter Tanjina Khatun, Sajeda Khatun, daughter of Abdur Razzak of South Khash Kauliya, Khadija Khatun, daughter of Amulya Das of Char Solimabad village and Banya Khatun, daughter of Rafiqul Islam.
On Thursday, a passenger boat capsized with more than hundred passengers while going to Char Solimabad from Mituyani Bazar Ghat, hitting an abandoned bridge in the middle of the river.
