9 die in Sirajganj boat capsize, 10 missing

At least nine people have been killed and 10 others gone missing in a boat capsize in the Jamuna River in Chouhali upazila of Sirajganj on Thursday.

Of the deceased, five are identified as Rashida Khatun, 16, Aduri Begum, 20, Akhter Hossain, 40, his wife Dilu Begum, 30, and Nayantara, 30.

Chouhali police station Officer-in-Charge Shamsul Haque told the Dhaka Tribune: “The boat capsized with some 150 people after being hit by a bridge in the Jamuna River. Most of the people on board managed to swim ashore but some 20 of them went missing. Later, nine bodies could be recovered. The rescue operation is underway.”

Bagutia UP Chairman Abdul Kahar Siddique said: “We have recovered nine bodies so far. Five of the victims,have been identified. The relatives of rest four have recovered the bodies themselves and took those to their respective villages.”

“We are trying to know their names.”

Sirajganj DC Md Belal Hossain has announced to give Tk10,000 each to the family members of the deceased.

UNO Md Abdullah said the injured have been taking treatment at Chouholi Upazila Health Complex.
