7 killed in Noakhali road accident

Seven people, including three of a family, have been killed and 30 others injured in a road accident on Sonaimuri-Chatkhil road at Jayag Bazar area in Sonaimuri upazila early hours on Tuesday.

The deceased are: Shirin Begum, 30, wife of Kabir Hossain of Paniwala village in Ramganj upazila in Laxmipur, her son Abu Moinuddin, 12, daughter Kohinur Begum, 9, port worker Nurul Haque, 42, of Ramganj upazila in Laxmipur, bus helper Mokhlesur Rahman Khokon, and two more persons whose identity could not be ascertained immediately.

A Chatkhil-bound bus of Balaka transport services from Dhaka plunged into a roadside canal as the vehicle veered off the road when the driver lost control over the steering around 3:30am, leaving seven people died and 30 others injured, UNB reported quoting witnesses.

Four people died on the spot and three others died after they were taken to two nearby hospitals.

Two units of fire fighters from Choumuhoni and Maijdi Fire Stations rushed to the spot for the rescue.

Later, a wrecker arrived from Comilla and pulled the bus out of the water.

Sonaimuri UNO Shirin Akhter and superintendent of police Ilias Sharif also arrived on the spot to monitor the rescue operation.

The injured are now taking treatment at Sonaimuri Health Complex and Noakhali Medical College Hospital.
