Following allegation of torture on a businessman in police custody, eight policemen of Sylhet Kotwali police station including its former OC Ataur Rahman and OC (investigation) Shyamal Banik have been suspended.
Confirming this, ADC (media) Rahmat Ullah of Sylhet Metropolitan Police said the police Head Quarter has made the suspension order of two inspectors while SMP commissioner made for the rest six of them.
The other six suspended police members were Sub-Inspector (SI) Ashraful Islam, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Abu Taher, Constables Adhir Chandra, Rajiv Kanti Das, Azadur Rahman and Nazmul Hossain.
Police sources said some police officers including OC of Kotwali police Ataur Rahman tortured Kamal Ahmad Chowdhury, brother of Chhatak Municipality Mayor Abul Kalam Chowdhury, in police custody on July 17.
Earlier, Kamal Chowdhury was arrested on charges of violating traffic laws.
In this regard, Shamim Ahmed Chowdhury, the younger brother of Kamal Ahmed Chowdhury, filed a writ petition with the High Court on July 4.
In this regard, a bench comprising Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Habibul Ghani, ordered the IGP and the police commissioner of Sylhet to take action against the accused.
A four-member committee headed by the Deputy Commissioner Akram Hossain was formed by Sylhet Metropolitan Police to investigate into the incident.
The committee submitted the report on Saturday night.
Under the light of the report, the suspension order was made on Sunday.
Meanwhile, OC Ataur Rahman was attached to Rangpur range on last Friday.
