China gaining on US as top economy

Update : 27 Jul 2014, 03:54 AM

China is supplanting America’s international role, new data from the Pew Research Global Attitudes Project shows the growing international consensus in this regard.

The median percentage of people naming US as the world’s leading economic power has dropped from 49% six years ago to 40% today. During the same period, the percentage of people naming China has risen from 19% to 31%, according to Pew’s analysts.

In Europe, a majority already see China as the world’s top economic power. 50% of the people surveyed worldwide believe China will eventually take the top spot.

The Pew Research Center’s Global Attitudes Project conducts public opinion surveys around the world on a broad array of subjects ranging from people’s assessments of their own lives to their views about the current state of the world.

How people around the world feel about their new Chinese overlords is the question.

China is more popular than the US in the Middle East. In Asia and Africa, the opinions are mixed. However, in Europe and Latin America, the US is significantly more popular than China.

About 53% worldwide say China’s economic growth is a good thing for their country. People around the world between the ages of 18 and 29 have significantly more positive views of both the US and China than their elders.

While public opinion around the world is becoming more solidly opposed to drones and NSA surveillance, overall views regarding the United States have not changed significantly.
