Average start for Bangladesh athletes

Bangladesh swimmer Mahfuza Khatun Shila finished fifth among eight participants in heat 2 of the women’s 50m breaststroke event in the opening day of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games yesterday.

Shila, who joined BKSP in 2003, took 35.88s to conclude the event which was 2.05s more than Kenyan swimmer RW Kamau who finished first in the heat. Overall, Shila finished 26th out of 35 athletes in five heats.

Bangladesh cyclists Refat Islam and Tarikul Islam finished at the bottom of the men’s sprint qualifiers in the cycling discipline, 26th and 27th respectively. Refat covered 14.156m with an average speed of 50.861 while Tarikul took 50.707 to cover 14.199m.

In the men’s table tennis event, Nigeria thrashed Bangladesh 3-0. Bangladesh doubles team, with a mixture of youth and experience, comprised of 16-year old Javed Ahmed and 35-year old Mahbub Billah, were beaten by Onaolapo and Aruna by 11-6, 11-6, 11-5 sets in the doubles. In the singles, Toriola beat Mahmub 11-8, 11-3, 11-7 while Manosh Chowdhury was beaten by Aruna 11-1, 11-3, 11-5.

Meanwhile in shooting, Abdullah Hel Baki and Rabbi Hasan Munna will fight to regain some lost glory when they take part in the men’s 10m air-rifle event today. Iqbal Islam and Noor Uddin Salim will play in the skeet hole. Armin Asha and Ardina Ferdous will play in the women’s 10m air-pistol today.
