A total of 246 workers died and 260 workers injured in different workplace accidents from January 1 to June 30, 2014, says a survey report.
The Bangladesh Occupational Safety, Health and Environment Foundation (OSHE) has revealed the data in its half-yearly workplace accident survey report.
The survey was conducted based on monitoring 15 leading national daily newspapers of the and reports of its field offices in different parts of the country.
The survey was conducted on construction, garments, agriculture, ship breaking sector and day labourers.
The major causes found for these deaths and injuries are electrocution, factory fire, boiler or water pipe explosion, building, roof or wall collapse and falling from height or ship.
As per the findings, the highest number of workers’ casualties were in the construction sector as 78 and 53 injured while the second highest number of workers’ casualties took place in the readymade garments (sweater, waving, knitting, spinning and composing). In the RMG sector, 12 workers died and 55 sustained injuries in the first half of the current year.
In the ship breaking industry, workplace accident killed 10 workers and injured 17.
In the informal sector, the highest number of workers’ casualties was seen in agriculture sector where 42 farmers died and 12 received injury.
Meanwhile, a total of 54 day laborers died and 35 were injured in the sector. On the other hand, 86 workers died from electrocution and 25 workers were injured.
Factory fire caused death of 68 workers. Thunderstorm killed 37 people and injured 18. Boiler or water pipe explosion and building or wall collapse cause death of 44 workers, said the survey report.
