At least two elderly people have been killed and 10 others fell sick due to the hot weather when a crowd gathered to take Zakat clothes in Manikganj town early Thursday.
The deceased are Jamila Begum, 60, wife of Md Ainuddin of Baroil village and Saleha Begum, 62, wife of Tipu Mia of east Doshra village.
Manikganj sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Aminur Rahman said: “Underprivileged people gathered in front of Bashundhara Group Chairman's Chief Advisor Mahbub Morshed Runi's house, hearing about the distribution of Zakat clothes.”
“Around 12 people fell sick when the people tried to enter the main gate of the house in a hurry around 4am. Later, two of them died when taken to Manikganj Sadar Hospital,” he said.
The others are being treated in the hospital, he added.
