The minister of communication yesterday issued a show cause notice to a Roads and Highways Department engineer in Khulna because a highway repair project had not yet been completed, the minister told journalists at a news conference from the highway.
Obaidul Quader, the communication minister, issued the show cause notice to additional chief engineer of the Roads and Highways Department, Khulna, Mohammad Ali, during a visit to Nawapara industrial town on the Jessore-Khulna Highway yesterday, where the minister walked along a stretch of the run-down road and expressed his dissatisfaction to journalists.
The minister ordered Ziaul Haider, executive engineer, Jessore, Mohammad Saifuddin, executive engineer, Satkhira, and Mehedi Khan, executive engineer, Kushtia, to complete the repairs within the next three days.
The minister told reporters he had made seven visits to the highway since becoming the minister for communication.
“A new contractor was given charge for the highway repair work,” the minister said.
“If the new contractor fails to complete the job by Eid-ul-Fitr, he’ll be replaced,” he added.
According to reports, the highway is badly potholed despite the minister’s visits. Piles of bricks, apparently to be used for repairs, were strewn across the highway at Nawapara.
