UGC suspends official on charges of corruption

Update : 21 Jul 2014, 07:22 PM

The University Grants Commission (UGC) yesterday suspended Ferdous Zaman, additional director of the UGC, on allegations of taking bribe from a university.

A press release issued by the UGC yesterday said Ferdous had taken Tk5 lakh as bribe from Britannia University.

The release also said a three-member committee was formed to investigate the incident.

After a study by Transparency International Bangladesh which alleged that a section of the UGC officials, education ministry officials and private university authorities were involved in financial irregularities, the UGC and Education Ministry sent letters to private universities, seeking information whether they had to give bribe at any level.

In response, Britannia University informed the UGC that Ferdaus Zaman took Tk5 lakh as bribe from them.

The TIB on June 30 said it found amounts ranging from Tk50,000-Tk2 lakh were being exchanged for getting names of VCs, Pro-VCs and treasurers approved, Tk1 lakh for inspection, Tk10,000-Tk20,000 for settling complaints and Tk1 lakh for preparing illegal audit reports.
