Transport strike underway in Barisal

The Bus Owners-Workers Solidarity Association has enforced a day-long strike on Barisal-Dhaka route demanding compensation for the victims of recent road crash that claimed lives of 12 people and injured 22 others.

Abu Taleb, counter manager of Hanif Paribahon at Nathullabad central bus stand of Barisal, said: “The day-long strike on Barisal-Dhaka route is going on Sunday as per the decision of the central committee of the association.”

Md. Kafiluddin, owner of Hanif Paribahon, said: “The incident was unwanted and shocking, but it was an unintentional accident. So, the company agreed to give compensation as per rules fixed by the government, not more than double of that rate.”

In the meeting it was decided that owner of Hanif Paribahon has to pay Tk60,000 for each family of the 12 dead, Tk25,000 for each of the 22 injured victims, Tk40,000 for each of the owners of damaged 8 tri-wheeler', Tk15,000 each for the owners of damaged 2 auto rickshaws, Tk10,000 each for the owners of 2 damaged rickshaws, Tk5,000 each for the owners of damaged 8 shops, Tk30,000 for treatment and dead body carrying cost for rickshaw puller Alamgir Hossain who succumbed to injuries at DMCH.

Meanwhile, people are suffering from the lack of the transport in the Barisal-Dhaka route. The counter managers are selling only the advance tickets in Gabtoli bus terminal.

On July 11, at least 12 people were killed and 22 others injured as a passenger bus plunged into a roadside ditch on the Barisal-Dhaka highway.
