Update : 18 Jul 2014, 06:18 PM

A trawler carrying about 35 passengers sank yesterday in the Sitalakhya River in Bandar Kheyiaghat area of the district.

Witness sources said the incident took place around 2pm and no missing persons or casualties were reported from the accident at the time of the filing this report in the evening.

ABM Mamtaza Uddin Ahmed, deputy director of Narayanganj Fire Service and Civil Defence, said the engine-run trawler moving towards Narayanganj central ferry ghat capsized because a cargo ship crashed into it.

There were about 35 passengers on-board. However, all of them managed to swim ashore with the help of nearby fishermen.

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority’s Joint Director Joynal Abedin said upon being informed, they started search drives as early as possible and by 5:30pm, they had not found any casualties.

One of the divers, Masum, said they spotted the sunken trawler and pulled it to shore with rope, and no bodies were found inside.
