Microsoft to cut up to 18,000 jobs

Update : 17 Jul 2014, 12:45 PM

Microsoft Corporation has said it would cut up to 18,000 jobs, or about 14% of its workforce, as it halves the size of its recent Nokia acquisition and trims down other operations.

As for the timing of the cuts, the company's CEO Satya Nadella said, "We are moving now to start reducing the first 13,000 positions, and the vast majority of employees whose jobs will be eliminated will be notified over the next six months."

In a memo to employees Nadella, said the majority of the cuts — 12,500 — will come from newly acquired Nokia.

The company said it will take pre-tax charges of $1.1bn to $1.6bn for the costs of the layoffs over the next four quarters.
