Knit Fashion Wear mugging

Police recovered Tk11.45 lakh of the Tk1.33 crore which muggers had stolen from a microbus at Kaliakoir upazila of the district on July 7.  

The recovery was made after separate raids and arrests were conducted in different areas of the upazila.

The arrested were Abdur Rashid, 28, Asim Kumar Mondal, 35, and Anwar, 40.  

Gazipur Police Super Abdul Baten revealed the information at a press conference yesterday.

He said acting on a tip-off, police arrested Abdur Rashid first from Chandra Dankini area of Kaliakoir upazila and rounded up the other two from Sinabah and East Chandura Pasha Gate areas of the upazila.

He said there might be eight people involved in the mugging.  

According to the police super, the lawmen first recovered Tk3.45 lakh from Abdur Rashid. Investigation Officer Atikur Rahman, sub-inspector of Kaliakoir police station, said following Rashid’s deposition, police were able to arrest the other two.

Rashid admitted that they were a total of eight members in the gang, including Hanif, Babu and Shukur.

Police said they recovered Tk3 lakh from Asim who ran a digital photo studio in Kaliakoir and Tk5 lakh from his father-in-law’s house in Jhenaidah.

Anwar was caught in the few hours of yesterday, the sub-inspector said, adding that the gang member from Tangail.  

The gang of muggers were lying in wait for the Knit Fashion Wear Ltd microbus, which was carrying the money. When the vehicle reached the board mill area, the gang swooped down on it and snatched the large sum which was supposed to be disbursed among the garment workers.
