‘Beauty is simple’

Update : 16 Jul 2014, 06:45 PM

A group of musicians with the ideology of simplicity formed the band Shohojia in 2009. Their debut album “Rongmistree” released at the end of last year and was a success among band music fans of the country. Dhaka Tribune caught up with the aspiring band to learn about their ideology and more.

What does “Shohojia” mean?

The title of the band is derived from a Bangla poetry-book “Charyageeti” that had lived through ages and is still acclaimed for its gravity, thoughts and creativity. A group mentioned in “‘Charyageeti,” named “Buddhist Shohojia” chanted their thoughts through poetry and music. They were one of those naturalist religious groups of ancient civilisation, who discovered their religion through nature and struggles of everyday life.

Does the simplistic lifestyle of the Buddhists inspire you?

We admire the way Buddhists express their feelings. Shohojia band members are writing and singing their songs in the same manner as the group Buddhist Shohojia. We are also interested in copying the lifestyle of the group, but since they lived a thousand years ago, it is a little difficult for us to maintain the exact same lifestyle.

What specific theme does the band cover?

We do not have any specific themes. We see, believe, write and sing. The theme of the band is not confined to any genre. We strongly believe that a song must have meaningful lyrics.

What is your usual songwriting process?

Our songs completely depend on our imagination and feelings. We express our feelings through words, so it is always a challenge.

Tells us about the lyrics.

We believe beauty is simple. Our lyrics are simple and aesthetically pleasant. It has an essence of rural Bangla.

What are your upcoming ventures?

We are about to release our second album “Ghora.” The composition of the album has already been finished. The title song emphasises on how people are always on the run, just like a horse.
