Outlawed man killed in Jessore 'gunfight'

A member of an outlawed party has been killed in a “gunfight” with two groups of rivals at Shubharara under Abhaynagar upazila in Jessore early Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Siraj Akunji, 40, son of Afsar Akunji of Shubharara village and an activist of outlawed Biplabi Communist Party.

Police said the man was killed in “gunfight” between two groups of terrorists, however the locals claimed that he was killed in police shooting.

Abhaynagar police station Officer-in-Charge Mollah Khabir Ahmed told Dhaka Tribune: “On information, police recovered the body of the outlawed party man after a gunfight between two groups of terrorists at a jungle in Shubharara village around 12:45am.”

“A gun and four shells of bullet from the spot. The gunfight continued for over half an hour,” he said.

Later, the body was sent to Jessore Medical College Hospital for post mortem examination.

The OC said Siraj is an accused in over a dozen of cases including five to six murders lodged with Abhaynagar, Monirampur and Phultala police stations.

Locals seeking anonymity told Dhaka Tribune that police arrested him in the early hours and took to the spot. Later, he outlawed party man was killed in police shooting.
