Murder case filed against JSTU BCL president

Father of Naimul Islam Riyad, who was stabbed to death, has filed a murder case with Kotwali police station accusing the president and general secretary of Jessore Science and Technology University Chhatra League unit.

Businessman Kazi Monirul Islam filed the case on Tuesday night, a day after his son Naimul, a fourth year student of the department of environmental science was killed allegedly by BCL members.

Shahidul Islam, officer in-charge, Kotwali police station told the Dhaka Tribune that a total of 11 BCL members, including its university unit president and general secretary, have been made the accused.

“But, none has been arrested in this connection.” Professor Abdus Sattar, vice chancellor, JSTU, said: “The probe body headed by Dr Iqbal Kabir Jahid, assistant professor, department of microbiology started investigation into the killing incident.”

Naimul has been stabbed to death allegedly by the activists of Chhatra League near the main entrance of the university on Monday afternoon.

Ariful Islam Riyad, president, Jessore district unit BCL, said: “The followers of Shahin Chaklader, general secretary, Jessore district unit Awami League killed Naimul as he did not attend the Iftar party arranged by the university unit BCL where Shahin Chaklader was the chief guest.”

Naimul's classmates Jelal Hossain Jewel and Ratul Das also claimed that the BCL activists, who support Shahin Chaklader, killed Naimul out of anger as he did not attend a iftar party of BCL on Sunday.

Following the killing, the JSTU has held an emergency meeting with Vice Chancellor in the chair and closed the university for an indefinite period.The students were asked to leave the hall by 10am on Tuesday.
