A female student of Rajshahi University has been killed as a train hit her from behind near the university's Art College railway crossing on Monday morning.
The deceased, Ishrat Arefin Alam, was a first year student of Applied Math Department. She hailed from the city's Hatem Khan area.
Witnesses said a Rajshahi-bound train from Parbatipur hit her from behind around 11am, while she was walking on the railway track, leaving her critically injured.
She was talking over phone during the accident, they said.
Later, locals rushed her to Rajshahi Medical Collage Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries at 12:45pm.
Mostafizur Rahman, maternal uncle of the deceased, said: “Ishrat received severe injuries to her head.”
Several friends of Ishrat claimed that she was under depression from the last few days over a love affair, adding that she might have committed suicide out of depression.
Motihar police station officer-in-charge Alamgir Hossain told the Dhaka Tribune: “The main reason behind the death is yet to be cleared.”
