At a crisis management committee meeting yesterday, leaders of the garment workers called on the factory owners to pay their salaries, festival allowances and overtime bills by Ramadan 20 (July 9), ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.
They also sought the security for the garment workers when returning home with their payments, citing a few instances of mugging in the past.
The Industries Affairs Regional Crisis Management Committee on Paying the Garment Workers Salary, Festival Allowance and Overtime Bills held a meeting at the conference room of the deputy commissioner.
Bangladesh Garment Workers Alliance General Secretary SM Masud Rana said Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) will hold a meeting regarding the payment, today.
BKMEA Vice President Mohamamd Hatem called on all the workers’ leaders to come forward to stop any workers’ unrest in their respective regions. He assured that steps would be taken soon for the workers’ salaries, festival allowances and others to be paid.
BKMEA President Salim Osman said he would talk with the leaders of the BGMEA.
He said factories vary in terms of paying a full-month salary before Eid because the workers are likely to change their workplace after the festival. So, whether the workers will be paid in full or not will be decided after meeting with BGMEA and BGKMEA leaders.
