Suspected criminal dies in police custody

A suspected criminal has died mysteriously in the custody of Mirpur police station in the early hours of Sunday, hours after his arrest.

Identified as Mahbubur Rahman alias Sujon alias Banku Sujon, he died at around 3:30am on the way to the Suhrarwardi Hospital, said Imtiyaz Ahmed, deputy commissioner of police at Mirpur Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

Son of Meher Ali Sikder, Sujon used to reside at a house at Shah Ali area of Mirpur.

The DC said police had arrested him late Saturday night at a house of the capital’s Hajarbagh with two firearms and 10 rounds of bullets.

His wife also had been taken to the Mirpur police station and after questioning, she had been released, the DC said.

"Sujon was a listed criminal and accused in several cases, including possessing illegal firearms,” he said.

The DC added: “Sujon had been suffering from breathing problem. When police was on the way to conduct a drive for recovering firearms as per the information he had provided.”

“On the way, he fell sick and was admitted to a clinic. When his condition deteriorated, the doctors of the clinic advised shifting him to a government hospital and he died on the way to the Suhrawardi Hospital”, the DC said.
