Update : 12 Jul 2014, 04:54 AM

Two persons have been killed in separate incidents of “gunfight” with the police in Jhenaidah's Harinakunda and Kotchandpur upazilas early Saturday.

Of the deceased, one was identified as Abdur Rashid. The police claimed that Rashid was a cadre of outlawed Purbo Bangla Communist party (PBCP-Janajuddho). They failed to confirm the identity of another deceased.

The district Police Super, Altaf Hossain, said acting on a tip-off, the police conducted two separate drives in Harinakunda and Kotchandpur upazilas early Saturday.

“A team of Kotchandpur police raided Doragram area around 3am. Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the outlawed party members opened fire on them, forcing the police to fire back, leaving Rashid dead. The police recovered a pipe-gun and three rounds of bullet from the spot.”

Two police constables have sustained injuries during the gunfight, added Altaf Hossain.

On the other hand, a gang of suspected terrorists hurled a crude bomb on a team of Harinakunda police in Hrishkhali Ambagan area around 2:30am while the law enforcers were patrolling the area.

In retaliation, police fired back that triggered a “gunfight,” leaving the unidentified terrorist dead, said the police super.

“Later, the police recovered one LG, two rounds of bullets and six hand bombs from the spot. Two policemen have sustained injuries during the gunfight.”
