A 300-metre stretch of China crossbar dam in Malsapara area of Sirajganj collapsed on Friday afternoon.
The embankment collapsed around 1pm due to a furious erosion by the river Jamuna.
Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) workers started placing sand-filled sacks with GEO textiles at the damaged area to protect the remaining embankment from erosion.
However, they could not bring the situation under control till filling of the report at 5:30pm.
Deputy divisional engineer of BWDB Julfiqar Tarek said the embankment was constructed by the China Harbour Engineering Company in 2010-11 fiscal year. However, no measures have been taken in three years for the protection of the dam.
