Suspected mugger killed in capital 'gunfight'

Update : 11 Jul 2014, 07:11 AM

A suspected mugger has been killed in a “gunfight” with the members of the Detective Branch (DB) of Police in the capital's Khilgaon area early Friday.

The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.

According to DB officials, while patrolling the area, a special DB team noticed that some young men were moving suspiciously near Khilgaon Khidma Hospital at 2:45am and challenged them.

Sensing danger, the gang reportedly fired gunshots targeting the detectives.

In retaliation, the DB personnel also started firing that triggered a gunfight, leaving one of the suspected muggers, aged about 40, injured.

The injured mugger was rushed to Dhaka Medical college Hospital, where the on-duty doctors declared him dead.

Confirming the news of “gunfight,” Deputy Commissioner (DB-PR) of DMP Masudr Rahman said: “Two DB constables--Alim and Jony Barua --were injured in the incident. They have been given first aid.”

DB officials said one pistol along with three rounds of bullets were recovered from the spot.
