Over 220 kilograms of dates were seized from Barisal and Wajirpur fruit markets yesterday by officials of consumer rights protection department (CRPD).
CRPD Deputy Director Abdul Majid said a team of CRPD officials led by him and accompanied law enforcers raided a wholesale fruit sellers’ enterprise Sajoyan Fruits at Port Road area of the city around noon. Majid said during the raid, it was found that about 40kg of dates at the shop contained 107 PPM of formalin, while only 11.3 PPM was approved by the authority.
Sultan Ahmed, owner of the shop and president of Barisal Fruits Traders Association, was fined Tk10,000 and the dates were destroyed.
In another raid at Wajirpur Bazar and Kali Bazar of Wajirpur, the CRPD team seized and destroyed 190kg of dates from the markets. Four shops at Wazirpur Bazar and two shops at Kali Bazar were each fined Tk1,000 and one shop at Wazirpur Bazar was fined Tk2,000, CRPD sources said.
